Clothing Options for Headshot Photography
Choosing an outfit for your headshot session can make or break your photo. Great clothing choice can help build your image, accentuate your body type, and put focus on your face and features. Remember that the main objective of getting a headshot is to present YOU in the best possible way. The clothes you wear should not distract instead it should accentuate to make it more effective.
As a general rule for headshots, your clothing should always be neat, clean and wrinkle free. This shows the viewer that you have self-worth. Avoid bulky clothing because they can make you look bigger. Your clothes should fit properly. Clothes that doesn’t fit you well, can make you look sloppy and unprofessional.
For your session, you want to wear something you are comfortable in but also flatters you. Stick with plain colors and avoid patterns. Patterns are too distracting and can date your photo so avoid stripes, polka dots, and other various patterns. Choose a color that compliments your skin tone and eyes. If you have blue eyes, wear a blue shirt that brings them out. If you have fair skin, wear blues, greens, pinks and grays. Contrast is key when picking out a color based on your skin tone. Stay away from white unless it’s under a suit jacket. Also, I would stay away from wearing black, many times details get lost in black clothing.
As for jewelry, we suggest to avoid if not refrain from using big statement pieces. Jewelry can take away focus from your face when our goal is to emphasize your face and eyes.
Finding the perfect outfit to wear to your headshot session can only do so much. Always remember to keep it classy, and if in doubt you can always ask a friend or your photographer their opinion.
